On iPhone Duo
- Open your iPhone Duo. The book opens to a fresh page.
- Drop ink on the right-hand page: tap to drop, hold still to pour, drag to smear. The arrow undoes your last stroke.
- Close your iPhone to press the ink, then open it again to see the blot.
- Tap “What do you see?”, type what you see, and the Examiner writes your reading.
On other iPhones and iPad
Ink the page the same way, then tap Fold. The page folds over, presses the ink and opens again by itself.
The Ten Plates
On a blank page, tap The Ten Plates at the top. You’ll be shown the ten inkblots Hermann Rorschach published in 1921, one at a time. Type the first thing you see, or pass. Then turn the page to learn what most people saw in that plate, how he would have marked your answer, what later examiners claimed for it, and whether that held up.
After the tenth plate you get a scoring sheet tallied his way. The letters are his: W for the whole blot and D for a detail, M for people in motion, FC and CF for color, F for form alone, A and H for animals and people, P for a popular answer. It is a tour of a famous experiment, not a test of you.
About the readings
On devices with Apple Intelligence turned on, readings are written on the device by Apple’s on-device model. Everywhere else, Inkblotter uses readings built into the app. Either way, nothing leaves your device.
Inkblotter is a parlor game inspired by Hermann Rorschach’s 1921 inkblot test. It is not a psychological assessment and can’t tell you anything clinical about yourself.
If you write something that sounds like you’re in trouble, Inkblotter stops the game and shows where to find help. In the US you can call or text 988 at any time.
Purchases and refunds
Inkblotter is paid for once, with no subscriptions, in-app purchases or ads. Apple sells it through the App Store and handles refunds: ask at reportaproblem.apple.com.
